Margaret A. Chesney, Ph.D., Deputy Director, National Center for
Complementary & Alternative Medicine, National Institutes of Health  pdf version of Flyer

May 5th, 2005, 12:00pm Noon- 1:00pm
WPIC Auditorium, Thomas Detre Hall, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine

Dr. Chesney, an established scientist in the area of behavioral or psychosomatic medicine is a
newcomer to complementary and alternative medicine. Her presentation will discuss the
boundaries between behavioral medicine, and mind-body medicine as it is being investigated by
research at the Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) where she is now
the Deputy Director. She will provide a brief review of the primary domains covered by
complementary or alternative medicine (CAM). Her presentation will focus on the most widely
practiced of these domains -- mind-body medicine, which involves the interplay of mind, brain,
other body systems, and behavior. She will discuss how there is evidence that patients faced
with chronic and even terminal illness -- particularly conditions like HIV/AIDS -- can learn and
employ a variety of mind-body practices to achieve a level of symptom relief and a better quality
of life, and in some cases, improvements in health outcomes. She will also describe research
that focuses on applying mind-body practices to enhance resilience and provide avenues for
disease prevention, and enhanced health and well-being. She will also review how NCCAM,
in its new strategic plan, has set out strategic goals for mind body research which include

. support of studies to:
1.  Identify the common and specific features of widely used mind-body medicine practices.
2.  Discover means of enhancing and accelerating the healing process beyond the
effects provided by conventional medicine.
3.  Explore the value of CAM therapies to reduce the burden of stress-related chronic illnesses.
4.  Explore the value of CAM therapies to enhance resilience, positive affect, and coping
in order to improve health and well-being, prevent or slow disease progression, and treat
disorders, diseases and their symptoms.
