Research Program
Dr. Hall’s research program focuses on characterizing the effects of stress on sleep and
evaluating the impact of stress-related sleep disturbances on health outcomes. She evaluates
these relationships in diverse populations including healthy and depressed children, adults, and
elders; caregiver populations; health care workers; women during the menopausal transition;
and adults with bereavement-related depression.  Health outcomes of special interest include
depression, anxiety, indices of immunocompetence, heart rate variability and cardiovascular
disease. She and her colleagues have used an array of study designs including experimental
laboratory studies; cross-sectional and longitudinal naturalistic studies; and, most recently,
intervention research, with a focus on modeling causal mechanisms. To the extent possible,
these studies use in-home monitoring of polysomnography and wrist actigraphy.
