Research Program
Dr Hipwell’s research interests focus primarily on the identification of developmental precursors
to female psychopathology (conduct disorder, depression, anxiety, somatization) in the context
of parental mental health disorders and family adversity. In addition, she has conducted research
examining psychosocial predictors of maternal mental health problems associated with
childbearing, and the sequelae of prenatal and postnatal symptomatology for both mother and
child. More recently her interests have broadened to include the interface between psychological
and physical health with research examining stress reactivity in girls with somatic complaints,
pain sensitivity as a potential risk factor for depression, and mental health risks for the
development of obesity and related cardiovascular problems.
