Research Program
Dr. Martire’s work is focused on psychosocial factors associated with late-life chronic illness,
with a special emphasis on linkages between chronic pain, depression, and family relationships.
She currently is conducting research on the efficacy of family-oriented psychosocial treatment of
chronic illnesses or impairments such as osteoarthritis, heart disease, and spinal cord injury;
caregiving burden in family members of clinically depressed older adults and its association with
patient response to psychiatric treatment; and linkages between spousal support and arthritis
patients’ daily physical functioning and activity level.
