The
major aim of this project is to determine the characteristics of our social
relationships that
influence susceptibility to infectious illness and to identify how these social factors get "inside the body". 180 healthy subjects were evaluated on their social relationships and on relevant behavioral, hormonal and immune measures. Subsequently, they were inoculated with one of two viruses that cause a mild common cold illness in about 40% of people who are exposed. Analyses focus on effects of relationship characteristics on who becomes ill and on pathways through which social factors might influence disease susceptibility. Analyses are ongoing. For
