This project will evaluate the utility of a commercially available portable device (SenseWear Pro
Armband) in the assessment of energy expenditure during physical activity in severely overweight
children in the laboratory and at home.  This work will provide important preliminary data for an
application designed to evaluate the impact of an intensive physical activity intervention on overall
energy expenditure in severely overweight children.  Specific aims for the investigation will be to:

1.  Examine the energy expenditure of severely overweight children in the laboratory during an acute
physical activity session using a dance game and an indoor walking video;

2.  Examine the accuracy of the SenseWear Pro Armband in the assessment of energy expenditure
in severely overweight children during a laboratory physical activity session using a dance game
and an indoor walking video in comparison to indirect calorimetry; and

3.  Examine the compliance of overweight children with utilizing the SenseWear Pro Armband at
home performing either the dance game or indoor walking video during a 2-week home-based
program.
