The research focus of PMBC is two-fold. One arm of the Center’s research efforts is five
RO1 projects. Four of these projects began in 2000 with the establishment of PMBC;
the projects focused on respiratory illness, osteoarthritis, subclinical cardiovascular disease,
and breast cancer. A fifth project started in 2004 and is examining the pathway that links
stress-induced cardiovascular reactivity to brain activation using fMRI.

The second arm of the Center’s research efforts is a component of the Developmental
Infrastructure to award innovative pilot funds. The pilot funds will be made available to local
investigators at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University
a)  to address research questions considered ripe for investigation in novel ways,
but not ready for NIH support; and
b)  to provide fiscal support to gather pilot data to support a more mature idea for
grant preparation relevant to achieving the major aims of PMBC.

PMBC's mission is to understand common pathways -- psychological, behavioral,  and
psychobiological -- that connect environmental factors with the onset of and recovery from
diverse physical illnesses. This principle model underlies the research and training conducted
through PMBC.
